The TEXT Bible Study Method:

T: Talk to God in Prayer

Before diving into the Bible, prepare your heart and mind. The first step of the TEXT method is to engage in prayer. Start by simply asking God for understanding and clarity about the passage you are about to read.

Your prayer doesn’t need to be lengthy. A brief request for insight or help in removing distractions can set the tone for your study. For example, you might say, "Lord, guide my thoughts as I read Your Word today." Inviting the Holy Spirit to guide your study is an important step in understanding scripture (1 Corinthians 2:14).

E: Encounter God and Humanity in Scripture

Once you've prayed, it's time to read the selected Scripture. Approach it with two important questions in mind:

  1. What does this passage say about God?

  2. What does it say about humanity?

These questions guide your reflection. For example, while reading Psalm 23, you may see God as a shepherd who provides guidance, love, and protection. You may also recognize human tendencies such as fear or the need for reassurance.

By engaging with these questions, you transform the Scripture from a historical text into a living message that speaks to your life today. Take notes on what stands out and how it relates to your experiences.

X: eXamine Your Heart

After reflecting on what the passage reveals, shift your focus inward. This step is about examining your heart.

Think about what you need to confess, what positive habits to embrace, or what burdens you can release. For instance, if you read about forgiveness in Matthew 6:14-15, consider who you might need to forgive or what grudges you should let go.

Writing down your thoughts during this introspection can be immensely helpful. Not only does it deepen your understanding, but it also encourages personal growth as you align your heart more closely with God’s will.

T: Talk to God and Others

As you conclude your Bible study session, have one final conversation with God. Thank Him for the truths revealed in the passage and for any insights gained. This expression of gratitude enhances your connection with Him.

This is the part that makes this acronym different than the others. Think about sharing your discoveries with others. Discussing what you've learned can reinforce your understanding and inspire those around you. Whether you're chatting with a friend or sharing during a small group, communicating your insights makes the lessons even more impactful.
