Bible Verses to Overcome Worry and Anxiety:

1. Philippians 4:6-7

Philippians 4:6-7 over a stylized forest with mountains picture

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

This classic anxiety-busting verse encourages turning anxiety into prayer. It reminds us that sharing our worries with God brings a peace that goes beyond what we can understand. God's peace guards both heart and mind, offering protection from anxious thoughts.

2. Isaiah 41:10

Isaiah 41:10 over an ocean sunset photo

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

When anxiety makes us feel alone or weak, this verse reassures us that God is present and ready to support us. His strength becomes ours, helping us face our fears with confidence. This verse was written during Israel's captivity in Babylon. On the surface, the situation looked as though God had abandoned his children. But we have the benefit of seeing the whole story—God used this time to convert the King of Babylon (see Daniel) and influence nations!

3. Matthew 6:34

Matthew 6:34 over a photo of flowers

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

This verse teaches focusing on the present instead of being overwhelmed by future worries. Christians are called to trust in the loving care and provision of God. It encourages living one day at a time, which can reduce anxiety about the future. We don't need to consider all the "what ifs" of life if we faithfully follow God's lead.

4. Psalm 94:19

Psalm 94:19 over a black textured background

When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.

This simple but powerful verse shows that even in deep anxiety, God’s comfort can bring joy. It reminds us that peace is possible even in difficult times. What promises of God have brought you consolation and joy? Share your favorite in the comments.

5. John 14:27

John 14:27 over textured orange background with a small dove graphic

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

Jesus offers a unique peace that the world cannot provide. This verse invites us to accept that peace and let go of fear and troubled hearts. As Jesus was preparing his disciples for his departure, he promised us an Advocate or Comforter (14:26). The disciples may have lost the physical leadership of Jesus, but we have gained the guidance of the Holy Spirit!

6. 1 Peter 5:7

1 Peter 5:7 over textured cream background

Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

This verse encourages handing over worries to God. It’s a reminder that we are not alone in our struggles and that God cares deeply about our well-being. God is big enough and strong enough to handle our burdens. He wants you to unload all your worries on him and seek his guidance. Peter says to cast ALL your anxiety on God, big and small, because he loves you.

7. Psalm 23:4

Psalm 23:4 over a starry night sky in the mountains

Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

"Anxiety hates Psalm 23." This entire psalm offers comfort during the hardest times. Knowing God is with us, guiding and protecting, helps reduce fear and anxiety. Knowing that his "goodness and love" desires that we "lack nothing" is a great comfort.

8. Proverbs 3:5-6

Proverbs 3:5-6 over photo of a spiral staircase

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

Anxiety often comes from trying to control everything or ensure outcomes. This verse encourages trusting God instead of relying only on our own understanding. I can think of many times that I have suffered under the weight of anxiety that I didn't need to carry because God's plan was better than mine!

9. Romans 8:38-39

Romans 8:38-39 over a colorful picture of space.

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

This powerful promise reminds us that nothing can separate us from God’s love. That love is a strong foundation to stand on when anxiety threatens to shake us. No matter what we face, seen or unseen, God promises that we are safe in his love. Satan will try any and everything to get us to doubt God's love for us and to make us anxiously try to forge our own path. But we only need to look to the Cross to be reminded that there is no need to question his commitment to us.

10. Hebrews 13:6

Hebrews 13:6 with a line drawing of hands clasped with a yellow graphic flare

So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?”

Ever wonder how the great people of the Bible could be so faithful and bold in the face of trouble and danger? They trusted in the Lord's help. They understood that there was more to fight for than this life. Matthew 10:28 says, "Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body..." On the surface, that doesn't sound too comforting—we don't want to die. But this verse is about the assurance of salvation. We have already won through Christ Jesus, and no one can take that away!

11. Jeremiah 29:11

Jeremiah 29:11 over a photo of a fertile field with mountains and trees in the background

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

This verse offers hope by reminding us that God’s plans are good. Jeremiah warned the people of the impending captivity of Israel if they didn't change their ways. They didn't listen and suffered the consequences. In spite of the Children of Israel choosing captivity with their actions, God still sent a message of hope. This verse comforts me because I have made plenty of mistakes, and this verse tells me that I can't ruin God's plans for me even if I make the path a little harder on myself.

12. Psalm 34:4

Psalm 34:4 over a picture of a man with his arms stretched looking out over an ocean sunset

I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.

This verse shows that seeking God brings answers and deliverance from fear. It encourages turning to God actively when anxiety arises. Seek him in study and prayer. Ask the Holy Spirit for guidance, and he promises to deliver answers and peace (1 Corinthians 2:10). Remember that sometimes the answer is just, "trust me."

13. Matthew 11:28-30

Matthew 11:28 over a dusk beach scene with purple hues

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.

Jesus invites those who are anxious and burdened to find rest in Him. This rest is deeper than physical rest; it’s peace for the soul. Notice that Jesus doesn't say you will be completely unburdened. You will still have a "yoke," but it will be shared with him. Faith and trust in Jesus is a guaranteed way to lighten your load.

14. Psalm 46:10

Psalm 46:10 over perfectly still waters during sunrise

Be still, and know that I am God.

This short verse calls for stillness and trust. It reminds us to pause, quiet our minds, and remember God’s control over all things. But there is more to knowing "I am God" than acknowledging his power and control. Part of knowing that he is God is understanding his character of love and how he wants to relate to us as a loving Father. God is speaking into our hearts, "Relax, I got this."

15. 2 Timothy 1:7

Super hero comic illustration of Jesus with the verse 2 Timothy 1:7

For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love, and self-discipline.

Anxiety is the fear of a perceived future threat. This verse reminds us that God’s Spirit gives strength, love, and self-control to overcome whatever the future brings. If God is for us, then nothing will be able to stand against us (Romans 8:31)!

These verses offer practical ways to face anxiety: prayer, trust, focusing on the present, and remembering God’s presence and love. Keeping these scriptures close can help shift anxious thoughts toward peace.

Try writing your favorite verse on a card or downloading the graphic to your phone wallpaper to remind yourself throughout the day. When anxiety strikes, pause and read the verse aloud or meditate on its meaning. Take a deep breath and allow the Comforter to quiet the storm of thoughts inside your head.
