A Guide to the REAP Bible Study Method

Lindsay Esterline

Updated: Feb 25

The REAP method—Read, Examine, Apply, and Pray—provides a straightforward way to engage with scripture meaningfully. This guide will help you navigate each step and connect with the Bible in greater depth.

We recommend setting aside at least 30 minutes at least once a week for deeper Bible study. If you would like more tips on planning your time and topics check out our podcast episodes on Planning and Bible Marking.

What is the REAP Bible Study Method?

Read

The first step in the REAP method is to Read the passage. While this may seem simple, approaching this step with intention is crucial. Start with a specific text—one chapter, a few verses. Read it slowly and thoughtfully.

Pay attention to repeated words or phrases; they often hold significant meaning. Try using different translations to deepen your understanding of the text's nuances. What do you see about God in the text?

Examine

Once you’ve read the text, it's time to Examine it closely. This step is about understanding the context, themes, and key messages found in the scripture.

Consider these specific questions:

  1. What is the historical context? For example, understanding that the book of Isaiah was written during a time of division in Israel can shed light on its messages about hope and restoration.

  2. Who is the author, and who is the audience? Knowing that Paul wrote his letter to the Romans for believers in a diverse, bustling city can influence how you interpret his teachings.

  3. What literary devices are used? In the parables of Jesus, like the Good Samaritan, evaluating how metaphors illustrate moral lessons can enhance your understanding. (See also our Literary Device in Scripture episode.)

  4. What do the verses mean? Look up words and phrases using resources like the blueletterbible.org. (Find more study resources here.) Try rewriting the passage in your own words.

Spending the extra time to examine the context and meaning of the text will help you prepare for the next step in the process.

Apply

With a solid understanding of the text, it’s time to Apply its lessons to your life. This step helps you see how scripture speaks to your current circumstances and challenges.

Ask yourself these practical questions:

  1. What principles can I extract from this passage? Identify timeless truths, such as the importance of love and kindness found in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7.

  2. How does this text challenge my beliefs or behavior? Consider how the teachings of Jesus challenge your views on forgiveness, especially if you struggle to forgive someone in your life, for instance.

  3. What specific actions can I take? Come up with a simple action plan. If you've identified that you struggle with generosity, commit to donating a certain amount or volunteering your time to help those in need.

This application step transforms your study from mere analysis to practical living, solidifying your faith in action.

Pray

The final part of the REAP method is to Pray. Prayer is a conversation with God—more than just requests.

Try these approaches while praying:

  1. Thanksgiving: Start by expressing gratitude for the insights gained. Praise Him in advance for the positive outcomes that your new-found wisdom will yield in your life.

  2. Confession: If certain areas of your life need to change, acknowledge them to God. Maybe you have struggled with anger, confess that and seek His help.

  3. Guidance: Ask for guidance on implementing what you've learned in your life. Invite the Holy Spirit to help you with the Apply step, and shepherd you through your next steps.

Praying cements your study's impact and builds your relationship with God.
